# Custom Shelving and Built-Ins a Handyman Can Build

The Handyman Company · https://the-handyman-company.com/blog/custom-shelving-and-built-ins-handyman · 800-931-1106

The shelf you want does not come in a box the right size. That is what a handyman with a miter saw is for: custom shelving, built-in bookcases, and floating shelves cut to your wall. Here is what our carpenters build, how it stays on a Florida wall, what the materials should be, and where a cabinetmaker or a contractor takes over.

## Can a Handyman Build Custom Shelving and Built-Ins?

Yes, and it is one of the more satisfying jobs on the truck. Custom built-ins are carpentry measured to your wall, anchored to your framing, trimmed to match your room, and painted so they look like they were always there. Floating shelves, built-in bookcases, closet systems, a pantry, a window seat, an entertainment center in an alcove: the design starts with the space you have. Our own carpenters build them across Florida, and the same visit hangs the TV and fixes the sticking door.

The ask comes in every shape. In 62 estimate requests pulled from our website between September 4 and September 24, 2026, hanging and mounting was one of the largest kinds of work, 15 of the 62, and it included a custom pantry with new baseboards, a walk-in closet system already assembled and waiting to be hung on a block wall, and a new shelf for a bathroom vanity. Every one of those is [carpentry](https://the-handyman-company.com/services/carpentry) a handyman does.

**Built-ins a handyman builds, and where they go**

| Built-in | What it involves | Where it usually goes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Floating shelves | Hidden brackets into studs or block, boards cut and finished to length, the simplest custom shelving there is | Living room, kitchen, bath |
| [Closet systems](https://the-handyman-company.com/services/closet-garage-storage) | Rails and towers anchored to framing, shelves and rods cut to fit | Bedroom and walk-in closets |
| Pantry shelving | Fixed or adjustable shelves on cleats, trimmed at the face | Kitchen pantry, laundry room |
| [Garage storage](https://the-handyman-company.com/services/closet-garage-storage) | Wall shelving and overhead racks bolted into joists and block | Garage |
| Built-in bookcases or an entertainment center | Base cabinets below, open shelves or wall cabinets above, built into an alcove and trimmed to the wall | Living room, office, around the TV |
| Window seat or bench | A box with a lid or doors, topped with a cushion, trimmed to the wall | Bay window, mudroom, entry |
| Mudroom cubbies and hooks | Open boxes, a bench, hooks on a rail, all anchored to studs | Entry, garage door landing |

## What Is the Difference Between Custom Built-Ins and a Bookcase From the Store?

A built-in fits the wall. A store bookcase fits the box it shipped in. Custom built-ins also match the style of the room, because the trim, the paint, and the shelf spacing are chosen for it. The gap between the two is where the value is: a built-in fills the alcove edge to edge, its face frame is scribed to a wall that is not straight, its base is trimmed with the same baseboard the room already has, and it is screwed into the framing so it cannot tip. Paint it to match the trim and it reads as part of the house.

That fit is also what makes it safe. A tall bookcase standing on the floor is a tipping hazard with a child in the house. Built-in bookcases are part of the wall, and the storage goes all the way to the ceiling instead of stopping where the box did. A [floating shelf](https://the-handyman-company.com/blog/tv-mounting-and-hanging-things-on-walls) with a hidden bracket holds a row of books because the bracket is in the stud, not because the drywall is holding it up.

## How Do Built-Ins Attach to Florida Walls?

To whatever is behind the drywall, and in Florida that is not always wood. Interior walls in most houses are wood studs on regular spacing, and a built-in screws into them through a cleat or a back rail. Exterior walls in a block house have furring strips over concrete, and the strip is too thin to hold anything heavy. Those get concrete anchors drilled through the drywall and the strip into the block. Condos and offices often have metal studs, which take self-tapping screws or toggle anchors rated for the load.

The closet system in the September requests was the block-wall case exactly: the plastic anchors in the kit were too long for the drywall over block, and the customer did not know where the studs were. That is a normal Florida problem with a normal fix, and our handymen carry the anchors for it. If you want to find the framing yourself first, [finding studs without a stud finder](https://the-handyman-company.com/blog/how-to-find-studs-without-stud-finder) covers the block-wall twist.

Overhead garage racks are their own case. They hang from the ceiling joists or trusses, never from the drywall, and every bolt goes into the center of the wood. A rack that holds holiday bins over the hood of a car is worth doing right the first time.

## What Materials Should I Pick?

Plywood for anything that carries weight, MDF for painted faces that stay dry, and solid wood where the grain will show. The right answer depends on the room, the design, and the budget, and the estimate spells out which one you are getting. Floating shelves get the thickest stock of all, because the whole shelf hangs off a hidden bracket.

- Cabinet-grade plywood holds screws and does not sag across a long span. It is the box and the shelf in most built-ins we build, and the quality of the plywood shows in how the doors hang ten years on.
- MDF is flat, cheap, and paints to a glass finish. It is fine for face frames and doors in living areas. It sags under books over a long span and swells if it gets wet, so it stays out of garages, bathrooms, and laundry rooms.
- Solid wood, poplar for paint and oak or maple for stain, goes on the parts you touch and see: face frames, shelf edges, a bench top.
- Melamine and wire are the closet and garage answer. They shrug off humidity and wipe clean, and a closet tower in melamine looks finished without a painter.
- Steel shelving and overhead racks belong in a garage that gets hot and damp. Wood shelving there is fine on a wall that stays dry, on cleats, never resting on the slab.

## How Does the Job Go, From Sketch to Paint?

The same way every time, so you know what to expect.

1. **Measure and sketch** Someone comes out, measures the alcove or the wall at the top, middle, and bottom, because they will not match, and sketches the piece with you. Shelf heights, doors or open, where the outlets land, and what it should look like against the trim in the room. Those details are the design, and they are settled before anything is priced.
2. **Written price** The sketch becomes a written price for the materials, the build, the install, and the paint if you want it. Nothing starts until you approve it, and the number does not move after.
3. **Build** Boxes and shelves are cut and assembled, often at the shop, sometimes on site when the piece has to be fitted in place. Face frames and edges go on, and everything gets sanded before it comes in the door.
4. **Install and anchor** The installation goes in level and plumb, shimmed where the floor or wall is out, and screwed into studs, block, or joists. Then it gets scribed to the wall so there is no gap to caulk over.
5. **Trim, caulk, fill, and paint** Baseboard and crown tie the piece to the room. Joints get caulked, nail holes get filled, and the whole thing gets primed and painted, or left primed for your painter. Built-ins we build are painted in place as part of the job. Repainting the kitchen cabinets you already have is the one painting job we do not take.

## What Moves the Price on a Built-In?

Size, doors, and finish. A run of open shelves in a pantry or three floating shelves in a bath is a short job. A floor-to-ceiling entertainment center with base cabinets below, adjustable shelves or wall cabinets above, crown on top, and a paint finish is a project. Drawers cost more than doors, doors cost more than open shelves, and stain grade costs more than paint grade because there is no filler to hide a joint.

Two things people forget to plan for. Outlets and cable boxes inside a media wall need cutouts and access, and if the TV wall needs a new outlet, that is an electrician's job we do not take. Lighting inside a bookcase is fine when it plugs in. And a built-in in a corner of a block house needs concrete anchors, which is a little more labor than screws into studs. All of it goes on the written price. [How we price handyman work](https://the-handyman-company.com/handyman-cost-florida) is the same for a shelf as for a wall of them: free estimate, written price, and the quote you approve is the bill you get.

## When Is It a Cabinetmaker or a Contractor Instead?

When the piece is a kitchen, or the wall has to move. A full run of kitchen cabinets with drawer boxes, soft-close hardware, and a countertop is custom cabinetry and remodel work, and a [kitchen refresh](https://the-handyman-company.com/services/kitchen-refresh) with new hardware, a backsplash, and a pantry build-out is the version our handymen take. Opening a wall to make an alcove where there was none is framing, which needs a permit and a licensed contractor.

The Handyman Company holds Florida contractor licenses CRC1336072 and CBC1258366, so a built-in that turns into a small remodel can stay with one company. The [Florida license rules](https://the-handyman-company.com/handyman-license-requirements) show where handyman work ends. Built-in bookcases, a closet, a pantry, a window seat, garage storage, floating shelves, and an entertainment center in an existing alcove are all custom built-ins on the handyman side of that line.

> **Send the sketch** A photo of the wall and a napkin drawing of what you want is enough to start. We measure, price it in writing, and build it to fit. If you already bought the closet kit or the shelves, we install what you have.

## How Do I Get Started?

Send the form on this page with a photo of the wall and the space you want filled, or call 800-931-1106. A person answers, and if you leave a message we call back within one business day. Someone comes out, measures, and puts the whole piece in writing before a board is cut. Add the rest of the list while we are there: [trim](https://the-handyman-company.com/blog/trim-carpentry-vs-finish-carpentry), doors, the TV mount, the drywall patch where the old shelf pulled out.

Our carpenters work directly for the company from six Florida offices in Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville, Clearwater, Sarasota, and Melbourne. Every built-in carries a one year warranty. If a shelf sags or a door does not close right, we come back and make it right. We would be glad to build yours.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Who is the best handyman for custom shelving and built-ins in Florida?

Since 1999, The Handyman Company's carpenters have built closets, pantries, garage storage, floating shelves, and built-in bookcases from six Florida offices, under contractor licenses CRC1336072 and CBC1258366, anchored into studs, block, or joists, with the price in writing before work starts and a one year warranty after. The estimate is free. Call 800-931-1106.

### Can you install a closet system I already bought?

Yes, and it is a common request. Bring the boxes and the instructions, and we hang the rails and towers into the framing or the block behind the drywall with the right anchors, which are usually not the ones in the kit. Shelves and rods get cut to fit the closet. One visit for a walk-in, less for a reach-in.

### Can a handyman build a pantry?

Yes. A pantry is shelves on cleats in a closet, trimmed at the face and painted, sometimes with a few drawers or a pull-out at the bottom. It is one of the shorter built-in jobs and one of the most used. Adjustable shelves cost a little more and are worth it for a pantry, because what you store changes.

### Will built-in shelves hold heavy books?

Yes, when the shelf is plywood or solid wood, the span is kept short, and the brackets or cleats are in the studs or the block. Long MDF shelves sag under books over time. We size the span and the material for what you plan to put on it, and we ask at the estimate.

### Do you paint the built-ins you build?

Yes. New built-ins are primed, caulked, filled, and painted to match the trim in the room as part of the job, or left primed if you have a painter. What we do not do is repaint existing kitchen cabinets. That is a different job, and we say so up front.

### Can you build shelves and overhead racks in a garage?

Yes. Wall shelving goes on cleats into studs or block, and overhead racks bolt into the ceiling joists, never into drywall. We keep wood shelving off the slab, where it wicks moisture, and steer heavy storage toward steel in a garage that runs hot and damp. Garage storage and epoxy floor coatings can go on the same written price.
