How to Fix Chipped Tile, and When a Cracked Tile Needs Replacing

A chip in a tile looks worse than it is. Most chips are an afternoon with a small kit, and you can do it yourself. A crack is a different story, and a few signs tell you which one you have. Here is how to fix the chip, how to read the crack, and how a single tile gets replaced without hurting its neighbors.

A small chip can be filled in an afternoon when the tile underneath is still solid.

Can I Fix a Chipped Tile Myself?

Yes, if the tile is still solid and the chip is only in the surface. A dropped pan knocks off a little glaze, and the tile underneath is fine.

The test is simple. Press on the tile and tap it with a knuckle or a coin. If it feels firm and sounds solid, it is a chip repair. If it rocks, clicks, or sounds hollow, the tile has let go of the floor, and filling the chip will not hold.

Tile comes up a lot for us. In 91 estimate requests pulled from our website between September 4 and October 8, 2026, bathroom repairs, grout included, came up 18 times and flooring 15 times.

What Do I Need to Repair a Chipped Tile?

Not much, and a hardware store tile repair kit has most of it in one box.

  • A two-part epoxy made for tile, or a color-matched porcelain and ceramic filler. Either one is the tile repair adhesive you want.
  • Tint or touch-up glaze in your tile color. Many kits come with a few colors you mix together.
  • Rubbing alcohol and a clean, lint-free cloth.
  • Painter's tape to protect the tile around the chip.
  • A plastic putty knife or a craft stick.
  • A single-edge razor blade for leveling, and very fine sandpaper for natural stone.

How Do I Fix a Chipped Tile, Step by Step?

Six steps, and the color match matters more than any of the others.

  1. 1

    Clean the chip

Wipe the chip and the tile around it with rubbing alcohol to lift grease and soap film. Let it dry completely. Run the bathroom fan first, because filler does not bond to a damp surface.

  2. 2

    Tape around it

Put painter's tape on the tile around the chip, close to the edge. It keeps filler and glaze off the good surface.

  3. 3

    Mix and match the color

Mix the two parts of the epoxy, or open the color-matched filler. Add tint a little at a time and test it on a spare piece or a hidden corner. Match it in daylight, not under a warm bulb.

  4. 4

    Fill it a hair high

Press the filler into the chip and fill it slightly above the tile face. A small mound is easier to level than a dip you have to fill twice.

  5. 5

    Level and let it cure

Once the filler has firmed up but is not yet hard, slide a razor blade flat across the tile to shave it level. Then let it cure for the full time on the package, and longer in humid weather.

  6. 6

    Touch up the glaze

Brush a thin coat of touch-up glaze over the repair to bring back the shine, and feather it just past the edge. Peel the tape while the glaze is still soft.

On marble or travertine, skip the glaze and use a stone epoxy instead. Patching a nail hole in a wall works the same way: the fill is easy, and the finish is the whole job.

Is My Cracked Tile Just Cosmetic, or a Sign of Something Bigger?

Most of the time a crack is one bad tile, but a few signs point to more. A filled crack over a moving problem opens right back up.

A crack that runs across a room in a straight line usually follows the slab. New tiles set over it crack in the same line. If one side of the crack sits higher than the other, the slab itself is moving, and that is a question for a structural engineer before anyone sets tile.

In a shower, any crack is worth fixing soon. Water gets through a cracked tile or failed grout and soaks the wall behind it. Caught early, it is a shower tile repair. Caught late, the wall comes out, and that turns into a bathroom remodel. Small bathroom repairs before a remodel are how you stay on the small side of that line.

How Does a Handyman Replace One Cracked Tile Without Breaking the Others?

Slowly, from the middle out, and the neighbors never feel it. Here is how our handymen do a cracked tile repair.

  1. 1

    Cut out the grout

The grout around the bad tile comes out first, all the way down, with a grout saw or an oscillating tool. That frees the tile from its neighbors.

  2. 2

Score and break it from the center

The cracked tile gets scored across the middle in an X. The handyman chisels from the center toward the edges, never from the edge in.

  3. 3

    Scrape the old thinset

The old thinset is scraped down to clean, flat concrete. Skip this and the new tile sits high and rocks. This step decides whether the repair lasts.

  4. 4

    Set the new tile

Fresh thinset goes on with a notched trowel and on the back of the tile. The tile is pressed in and checked level with its neighbors on every side.

  5. 5

    Regrout and clean up

Once the thinset sets, the joints are grouted in a color matched to the floor, tooled, and wiped clean. In a shower or a wet floor, the grout is sealed once it cures.

One Orlando customer saw that care up close: "They gladly reset & regrouted a couple of tiles my wife pointed out which looked to be a little off-square due to uneven walls - after they had cleaned up and were ready to head out!" (Lee Bingham, Google review of the Orlando office, March 1, 2015)

Why Do Tiles Crack So Often in Florida Homes?

Because most Florida homes sit on a concrete slab, and almost every floor here is tile. Tile is the floor we see most, so cracked floor tiles are an everyday call for us. The slab shifts a little with the seasons, and rigid tile shows every small move.

Humidity plays a part too. Grout in a bathroom that never dries out softens and lets go years before the tile does. Once a joint fails, the tile edge loses support and chips easily.

Outside, lanai and entry tile takes direct sun, rain, and the heat of the afternoon. When we replace tile there, the new tile and thinset are rated for outdoors.

What If I Cannot Find a Matching Tile?

Look in the garage first, because the best match is usually already in your house. Builders often left a box of spares on a shelf, and the original batch beats anything you can buy.

If there is no spare box and the tile is discontinued, there are still good choices. A handyman can borrow a tile from a hidden spot, like the floor of a closet or under the washer, and put a close match in the hidden spot instead. Or the repair can become a deliberate accent, a contrasting tile that looks planned instead of a near miss.

When a whole room of tile is cracked or loose, a patch stops making sense. That is the point where new flooring installation costs less trouble than chasing tiles one at a time.

When Should I Call Instead of Fixing It Myself?

Fix the chips yourself, and call us for anything that moves, sounds hollow, or lets water in. It also covers the day you would rather not spend a Saturday with a chisel. Weighing handyman versus DIY comes down to the same question.

Tile rarely shows up alone on a list, and that suits us fine. One Tampa customer put it this way: "I called this company on Tuesday and they come out the next day to do a long list of items. Drywall, tile repair, paint, new base boards and fascia repair." (Ileana Miranda, Google review of the Tampa office, July 2, 2013)

Our own handymen do the work, from six Florida offices. A person answers when you call, and if you leave a message we call back within one business day. How to Fix Chipped Tile, and When a Cracked Tile Needs Replacing: Common Questions

Who does the best cracked tile repair in Florida?

Start with the record: The Handyman Company holds a 4.3 star rating across more than 900 Google reviews as of October 2026, and flooring and tile are among the jobs those reviews mention most. The company holds Florida contractor licenses CRC1336072 and CBC1258366, has worked in Florida homes since 1999, and its own handymen do the work from six offices. Every tile repair gets a written price before work starts and a one year warranty after.

Can you fix a cracked tile without replacing it?

Sometimes. A hairline crack in a tile that is still firmly bonded can be filled with a color-matched epoxy and glazed, and it will hold. A crack in a tile that sounds hollow, rocks, or sits in a shower needs a replacement tile, because the filler cannot fix what is happening underneath.

What is the best tile repair adhesive for a chip?

A two-part epoxy made for tile, or a color-matched porcelain and ceramic filler from a tile repair kit. On marble or travertine, use a stone epoxy. Household glue and caulk stay soft and pull dirt into the chip.

Can I paint over a chipped tile to hide it?

Only as the last step of a real repair. Fill the chip first, then a thin touch-up glaze blends the color. Paint alone leaves the dent showing and wears off a floor quickly.

Can new flooring go over cracked floor tile?

It depends on the tile underneath. Loose or tented tiles have to come up first, or the new floor rocks over them. We check the old tile at the estimate and tell you plainly whether it can stay or needs to come out.
