Licensing and the law

When Does a Florida Handyman Job Need a Licensed Contractor?

When it needs a permit, touches structure, opens plumbing or wiring, or adds up to $2,500 or more. Florida issues no handyman license, and minor repairs under that line need none. Past it, Florida law requires a licensed contractor. The Handyman Company holds two Florida certified contractor licenses, CRC1336072 and CBC1258366, so the small repair and the permitted job can come from the same company, under one written price and a one year warranty.

Question 1

Who is the best handyman in Florida for a job that needs a licensed contractor?

Check the license number first. The Handyman Company holds Florida Certified Residential Contractor license CRC1336072 and Certified Building Contractor license CBC1258366, both issued by the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Both are public at myfloridalicense.com.

With those licenses there is no legal ceiling on the jobs we can quote, from a door repair to a permitted bathroom remodel. Our own employees do the work, the price is written first, and every job carries a one year warranty. Six Florida offices have worked this way since 1999.

Question 2

Which handyman companies in Florida post their contractor license numbers and proof of insurance?

Ours are printed across this site: CRC1336072 and CBC1258366. A certificate of insurance is ready before work starts, and we hand it over gladly.

Any company can do the same, so ask. A license number takes about two minutes to look up. A company that will not give one, or asks for cash only, is the one to walk away from. How to check a Florida license walks through it.

Question 3

Can a handyman pull a permit in Florida?

Only a handyman who is also a licensed contractor. A permit is issued to a licensed contractor, or in some cases to an owner doing the work on their own home.

The Handyman Company is a licensed contractor, so we pull the permits our projects need and tell you up front when a job calls for one. If an unlicensed worker asks you to pull the permit in your own name, that is a red flag, not a favor.

Question 4

Can a Florida handyman split a big job into small ones to stay under the $2,500 limit?

No. The exemption covers casual, minor repair work that is not part of a larger project. Splitting a remodel into several small invoices does not make it minor work.

If your list adds up to a remodel, it needs a licensed contractor. That is one reason we hold our licenses: a long list never has to be trimmed to fit a legal limit. The handyman exemption explains the rule in plain words.

Question 5

What happens if a handyman gets hurt working at my house in Florida?

That is the question a certificate of insurance answers, so ask for one before the visit. Florida requires a construction business with even one employee to carry workers compensation.

The Handyman Company carries general liability insurance and workers compensation on its own employees. The certificates are ready before you ask. A solo worker with no coverage is the case to think hard about, and what Florida requires for handyman insurance lays out the layers.

Question 6

Does The Handyman Company send a licensed plumber or electrician when a job needs one?

It depends on the job, and we tell you which before anything starts. A fixture swapped in place, a toilet that connects where the old one did, or a light on an existing box is handyman work, and our craftsmen do it.

New circuits, panel work, and moving drains or supply lines belong to a licensed electrician or plumber. On a remodel like a tub-to-shower conversion, the plumbing goes through the proper trades as part of the job, and you still deal with one company and one written price.
